Nigeria’s labour market has generated jobs at a much slower pace than required to absorb Nigeria’s rapidly growing working age population. The disconnect between the expanding working age population and the shortage of job opportunities has resulted in abnormally high rates of unemployment.

Diaspora Engagement, Remittances and Brain Gain

Migrant remittance inflows are the greatest contribution of international migrants to national development. Migrant remittances in Nigeria rose to $24 billion in 2019 (equivalent to 5% of GDP) but declined to $17.6 billion in 2021 (3.7% of GDP) owing partly to the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on international migration.
